We're delighted to be the producing partner's on Cape Farewell’s latest Climate Change/Art project, Energy Renaissance, creating a Virtual Reality experience with pioneering virtual reality studio Hammerhead VR and the Environmental Research Group at King’s College London.
This experience will allow visitors to virtually interact with the physical environment of The Strand – the busy area surrounding Somerset House. Through the implementation of behavioural, scientific and technological changes, individuals will transform and de-carbonise their city into a greener, more peaceful neighbourhood, that no longer poses a threat to health nor contributes to climate change.
Across the world, scientists, environmentalists and entrepreneurs are taking up the challenge of pollution and climate change – carbon neutral urban environments are easily achievable - the Energy Renaissance project places individuals at the centre of London's evolution, where their actions form vital steps towards this feasible, safer and healthier post-carbon urban future.
The project draws on gaming, immersive theatre, and stunning graphics to create a visceral experience, not one set in a fictional future but one that is inspired and informed by present day reality.
Energy Renaissance is part of Utopia 2016: A Year of Imagination and Possibility. Utopia 2016 is a collaboration between three neighbours: Somerset House, King’s College London and The Courtauld Institute of Art, in partnership with The British Library, the AHRC, and the British Council. The London School of Economics will also engage many of the 300 plus creative organisations, artists and makers resident at Somerset House.

ABOUT UTOPIA 2016
UTOPIA 2016: A Year of Imagination and Possibility at Somerset House celebrates the 500th anniversary of the publication of Thomas More’s inspirational text and is the largest ever celebration of this radical work anywhere in the world. It spans the realms of art, literature, fashion, design, architecture, film and more, featuring a varied programme of special events, exhibitions and new commissions across the Somerset House site and beyond. The Utopia Treasury, in Somerset House’s Great Arch Hall and open all year, will invite people to explore, taste, and imagine utopia.
Thomas More was the first to give a name and form to an idea that has captured the human imagination throughout history: that by imagining a better world is possible, we are empowered to create it. His playful vision, published in 1516, presents an ideal society living on a fictitious island, described in a traveller’s tale. More’s Utopia is deliberately ambiguous, the Greek words on which the name is based mean both ‘no place’ and ‘good place’. It is not a blueprint for the future; instead he places importance on the process of dreaming in the now.
To celebrate More’s vision, UTOPIA 2016 explores challenges facing contemporary culture and society, and the pivotal role of the arts and culture in creating the space where dreams can take root.

Mind's Eye is an audio installation which brings art and science together and offers the audience an opportunity to explore and understand the solar system via the voices of those most familiar with it.
Audiences pick up a set of headphones and take a trip on foot through the solar system guided by scientists, astrophysicists and engineers working on ‘live’ missions in space.
Leave the Earth and Moon behind, wander in close to the Sun, swing out past Mars, and stride into the outer reaches of the solar system via Rosetta's comet landing. Explore Saturn’s densely populated system with Cassini meandering from Titan to Enceladus to the rings of Saturn herself, and continue all the way out to Voyager 1 now in Interstellar space...

The Shrinking Space app was designed to accompany our installation, Mind's Eye at Manchester Central Library, as part of Manchester Science Festival. We are currently updating the platform for a new project over Summer 2016
The app accompanied our audio installation, Mind's Eye to intersperse factual, historical and cultural references about humanity’s search to understand the mysteries of our solar system and encourage audience’s think about where space exploration will take us next?
The audio installation and app was free and employed beacon technology to react to audiences location and nudge individuals to interact with the library - from delving into video archive footage to finding hidden messages in leather bound physics books in the reference section.
The app has been developed in partnership with Dot3, who create media, branded content and experiences based on Bluetooth LE beacons and the Internet of Things.
Inspired by our conversations with the public during the Mind's Eye tour we have started development of a new project entitled, My City on Mars - an interactive mobile app and offline experience, which invites the general public to devise and design a new colony on Mars.
The app utilises beacon technology and a UK city's infrastructure to create new forms narratives and interactions, which inspire the general public to explore the potential for a crewed mission to Mars. The piece will also examine our historic human fascination for the search for other life in the Solar System.
The app’s narrative will be gamified using pioneering proximity-based storytelling and based on the real and compelling science humanity’s current endeavours in space exploration.
Shrinking Space is working in partnership with the British Science Association and Plantasia in Swansea to curate an evening of art and science for the British Science Festival 2016.
